Off Center Productions

Off Center Productions is our pottery studio where we create fine one of kind quality porcelain pendants, flower focals, beads, and miniature baskets. We have been making pottery for many years but recently began making ceramic pendants. The ceramic process includes forming each pendant and bead by hand, bisque firing, glazing, and firing again to cone 6 or 9. There is a long pottery tradition of making beads of clay and we love the entire ceramic process. Pottery is all about patience and we love the creative process. We also make porcelain boxes, bowls, trays, vases, and pendants in our pottery studio. See our Gallery.

Our goal is to create specialty porcelain pendants and beads for creative jewelry designers who choose to utilize the ceramic medium. The tradition of forming beads out of clay is an ancient one and the magic of combining fine porcelain beads with crystals, silver, gold, and glass is ancient. Our pottery studio strives to create one of a kind, truly unique porcelain pendants and beads. We are seeking collaborations with jewelers and "beaders" who want to use our porcelain pendants and beads in their jewelry. We love what we do and hope our porcelain pieces find their way to other creative folks who can turn the pendants into beautiful jewelry. We hope to support the small but active pottery community of artists making porcelain and stoneware pendants and beads- keeping this ancient pottery tradition alive.

In our pottery studio, we also create porcelain boxes, bowls and trays. Lana makes porcelain "Mother Bowls" which are entirely hand built and can be both functional and decorative. The porcelain "Dream Boxes" make perfect gifts and are used to hold affirmations, prayers or mementoes. Porcelain vases and trays are also available. We use many textures in our ceramic process ranging from deep embossing of ethnic and ancient symbols to fine lace. Some of the porcelain vases are paper thin and translucent, truly ceramic show pieces. Guests are welcome to visit out pottery studio by appointment. See our Gallery.

“A wild patience has taken me this far” from an Adrienne Rich poem describes the formation of Off Center Productions. Lana and Joan have toyed with a studio on and off for many years. They both pursued active professional careers in Seattle. Lana also studied pottery and worked as a studio potter at Pottery Northwest. Finally after wandering like gypsies and sorting out a lifetime of dreams put on hold, they have established a pottery studio, Off Center Productions in Lacey, Washington.

Lana is an Aries, loving the fire; a seasoned potter; professional in her process and pursuit of magical porcelain vessels, bowls, and boxes. She calls her bowls-“mother bowls” with all their potential to hold and contain spiritual energy.

Lana’s “dream boxes” are just that-repositories for dreamscapes, treasures, and secrets. Her goal is to create the thinnest, most succulent vessels- so transparent it seems impossible that they were shaped by human hands. To experience such a bowl coming out of the kiln is to experience magic and skill.

Joan is a Taurus- all messy and loving the process. She loves the earthly mess of Grolleg clay. She values the potential of the porcelain as she shapes her mythical sculptures. Joan loves to research archeological symbols and ancient sites where pottery was made by women honoring the earth. She loves the glaze process; dreaming of all kinds of colors-making the clay sing with its glass coating. She wants to create pendants and beads for jewelry makers which will become focal points in their work.

Kramer is the studio cat. A feral rescue, he is king of the glazing surfaces and greenware racks. Sometimes his paw prints are found on just rolled slabs. Smokie a found cat maintains control over the yard and garden -keeping opossums, raccoons, and lately wild bunnies at bay.
